Consulting the cosmos: What astrology says about the 2024 election

The commonwealth has been so inundated with polling data this election cycle that it’s likely that Pennsylvanians are experiencing some political poll fatigue. So rather than parse through more polling minutiae, we decided to consult our go-to astrologer about what to expect heading into the 2024 general election. 

Astrology is viewed as a form of divination that involves observing the stars, sun, moon and planets to forecast earthly and human events, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. It can be traced back to the Babylonians, who used the stars and planets to interpret spiritual and religious omens. It was later embraced by other civilizations, including the Greeks and the Romans, and has been used to try to predict weather patterns, natural disasters, wars and other events throughout human history, according to the American Federation of Astrologers. 

City & State spoke with the internationally renowned Susan Miller, founder of AstrologyZone.com and author of 14 books on the subject, who walked us through what the cosmos can communicate about how the commonwealth could go in this year’s presidential contest.

Miller told City & State that while the cosmos can tell us a lot about a person and their traits, it isn’t completely predictive. “First of all, astrology is not destiny. Someone with a very good chart could get a little lazy, and the person with an unfortunate chart could work harder – actually, difficult aspects give you a lot of energy. It’s like nature gives you something to deal with it,” she said. “It’s not like a cookbook where we could sit back, ‘Oh, he’s gonna win.’ No, it’s not like that. We all have to vote.” 

But astrology can provide a glimpse into personality traits, strengths and weaknesses. Miller looked through the birth charts of two major political candidates – former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris – to offer some insight into this year’s pivotal Pennsylvania elections.

When it comes to their respective zodiac signs, Trump – born June 14, 1946 – is a Gemini, a sign known for being charismatic and humorous, per Co–Star Astrology. Harris, who was born on Oct. 20, 1964, is a Libra – an empathetic sign that Miller said is often dedicated to fairness. 

“People who are born in October or end of September – Libra – they’re very interested in fairness,” Miller said. “There’s always a connection to law with Libra, and they always want life to be fair, and the rest of us say, ‘Are you kidding?’ But they think it can be and they say, ‘No, we have to go back and look at this, and there has to be a way to make it fair.’ Kamala is also ruled by Venus, so she has this social quality. She’s very much of a people person.”

She noted that on Trump’s chart, the position of Mars is “on the horizon line of Earth,” which may explain why the former president can have a combative personality at times.

“That’s why he’s, can we say, a little competitive? He always thinks he’s running into battle with a spear raised above his head – because it’s Mars,” she said. “Mars is the warrior, and he thinks everything’s a battle, and sometimes it’s not, but he hasn’t figured that out yet.”

Both candidates are gifted communicators, Miller said, something she said could be attributed to their birth charts.

“Donald Trump is a Gemini, 23 degrees. Kamala Harris is a Libra, but she’s Gemini rising, 24 degrees. They are so evenly matched, and they’re both good communicators,” Miller said. “Trump has really made his name in communication. He’s done so well – I mean, the TV show and everything – and is very good at persuasion.”

Miller said both Trump and Harris have strong astrological charts due to Trump being a Gemini and Harris having a Gemini rising. She said Geminis are experiencing what she calls an “Emerald Year” in 2024. An Emerald Year, according to Miller, occurs when the planet Jupiter visits your zodiac sign for a full year. 

“Gemini, right now, has the best chart of anybody – they’re living in their Emerald Year, and it comes every 12 years. I call it the Emerald Year – the ancients didn’t – it sparkles. It’s just every 12 years, Jupiter comes to visit your sign for one full year. That’s what both Kamala and Donald Trump have, and because the degrees are so close – 23,24 – they’re looking at the same time.”
