PA politicos are flocking to Bluesky – here’s who to follow
Following the general election, Democratic lawmakers and other left-leaning posters have left X for the social media app Bluesky.
The relationship between elected officials and how they use social media is ever-changing. From efforts to adopt Facebook and X to communicate with constituents, to embracing TikTok trends and short-form videos for educational and engagement purposes, much like the rest of us, Pennsylvania politicos often seek to stay on top of the latest digital developments.
That’s evidenced by an apparent exodus from X as Democrats and left-leaning users move away from the app owned by billionaire tech mogul and GOP megadonor Elon Musk in favor of Bluesky, an alternative to X. The platform, which boasts more than 24 million users as of December 2024, was founded in 2019 as a project of then-Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. However, Bluesky established itself as an independent company in 2021 and is currently owned by Jay Graber.
To date, many of the Pennsylvania politicos that have migrated to Bluesky are Democrats or those on the political left, with few, if any, conservative or GOP officials from Pennsylvania on the app. There are a smattering of conservative accounts on the platform, though.
Prominent Pennsylvania officials on Bluesky include U.S. Sen. John Fetterman’s office, Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton and several Democratic members of the state’s congressional delegation like U.S. Reps. Brendan Boyle, Madeleine Dean, Chrissy Houlahan and Summer Lee.
Other members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, as well as electeds from Philadelphia City Council and other local offices have also established a presence on Bluesky.
Below, City & State has put together a running list of Bluesky accounts with ties to Pennsylvania politics and government.
