What are the crucial issues that need to be addressed for Pennsylvanians to most effectively deal with its aging residents in the short- and long term?

With the November election right around the corner, it’s important to note that a recent AARP poll of likely PA voters 50+ found that voters of all political stripes want leaders to protect Social Security and provide support for family caregivers. Moreover, a significant majority (68%) think the country is headed in the wrong direction; 63% are worried about their personal financial situation, with the cost of food and utilities ranking as top drivers of financial stress; and 89% are concerned about fraud and scams. These are the issues that all candidates need to address to be successful in November.

What are some of the ways you/your organization is working to make that happen?

Recognizing that nearly 2 million hardworking Pennsylvanians lack access to a retirement-savings plans at work, we’re advocating for the passage of Keystone Saves to make sure that everyone in Pennsylvania has the opportunity to secure their financial futures by saving for retirement via a workplace program.  We’re also pushing for law changes to crack down on a shady real estate practice that can lock unsuspecting older Pennsylvanians into long-term agreements that make it tough to sell their homes. We also advocated for an expansion of the property tax rent rebate program that will enable more older Pennsylvania homeowners and renters to remain in their homes and communities – where they want to be; and we are fighting to stop unfair utility rate increases.

What is your elevator pitch to explain just how important adopting and optimizing how older Pennsylvanians live is to improving the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians?

For over 60 years, AARP has been a 'wise friend' and 'fierce defender' helping individuals ensure that their money, health and happiness live as long as they do. In the Keystone State, AARP has earned a reputation as a wise friend and fierce defender through trusted information, tools and advocacy designed to protect the health and financial security of Pennsylvanians 50+ and empower them to choose how they live as they age. By promising to act as a wise friend and fierce defender, we are helping older Pennsylvanians and their families feel confident, in control and secure as they age.
